Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year Bassett Students & Families,

I am your proud Principal of Sunkist Elementary School, home of the college-bound Tigers. I am so excited to start off the school year with each and every one of you. We are going to have an absolutely fabulous year! I'd like to share a little about me. I am an educator, mom, wife, sister, daughter, and friend. I have been in education for over 20 years, serving as a Head Start pre-school teacher, elementary school teacher and middle school assistant principal. As your principal, I am committed to supporting a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment for our Tigers. I genuinely believe in making valuable connections with our students, families, and Tiger staff. I believe in open communication, so please never hesitate to reach out with any questions or needs you may have for your child/children. I also really want to encourage all of our families to attend our meetings and events so that you can continue to connect with your child's/children's school. Sunkist is a special place to be and we want you all to feel connected to your school community.

In 2015 Sunkist officially became a "No Excuses University" (NEU) school. Today we continue to build on the six exceptional systems of NEU. We do this work because we believe that every student deserves to be educated in a way that prepares them for college. We also believe in educating the whole child, so we focus on Social Emotional Learning and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) to nurture “kids of character.” In every classroom, we provide all our students with daily rigorous instruction that promotes the development of the 21st century skills of: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

Sunkist continues to recognize many students have great needs both in academics and social-emotional learning. We support these needs by including interventions during the school day to ensure all students meet their goals. We will continue to focus on three areas of critical importance for our students and the Bassett community: provide a safe and welcoming learning environment, work with parents and students to increase daily attendance, and provide engaging and rigorous learning that will set up students for success in middle school, doing our part to prepare college and career-ready students.

On behalf of the whole “Tiger Team,” I would like to wish all of you a successful and memorable 2023-24 school year and always remember, "after Bassett High School, comes college."

Sincerely,

Megan Esquer
